Good old times

I have gotten a couple of inquiries about my current main icon. It is Captain Flam, AKA Captain Future.
For the last few years I have become retarded and very nostalgic about the cartoons that I watched when I was a kid. Indisputably, I grew up with the best cartoons ever made. Captain Flam was shown on Portuguese TV in the late 70's and I also got to enjoy Future boy Conan (Miyazaki), Goldorak, Astro boy,Chapi-Chapo, Les Mysterieuses Cites D'or (which with each episode gave you 5 minutes about European history and South American culture) , the Once upon a Time series and crapload of others. In the late 80's I came to Canada and had wide access to American TV and 2 PBS stations to which I was often glued. I devoured anything from the Children's Television Workshop like 3-2-1 Contact and Ghostwriter .

That quality is gone and can't even imagine what kids are watching but I do know that they seem dumber than ever. Dunno if I can blame that on the quality of cartoons these days but I must stress, for example, the Once Upon a Time series.
There where 3 that I know of:
Once upon a time Man (which had a kick ass opening)
Once Upon a Time in Space
and Once upon a time Life

These were really well done and tackled science education, space exploration, how the body works and human evolution.
Granted, I have been away from American TV for a while but as far as I know, there is not one mainstream cartoon or TV show outside of PBS that bothers teaching Kids anything. Please, PLEASE correct me if I am wrong...

He got a lot of flesh."

The painting will be on public view in London for the first time at a special exhibition at Christie's and will go on sale on the other side of the Atlantic as the highlight of Christie's New York Post-War and Contemporary Art Evening Sale on May 13.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/arts/main.jhtml?xml=/arts/2008/04/11/bbfreud111.xml

The fact that Lucian Freud is one of the greatest comtemporary artists alive is unquestionable.
This kind of moronics speculation is not.

Oh yes

After seeing all Oscar nominated pictures (except for Juno which I honestly do not give a shit about), I am certain that There will be Blood will win.

D.D. Lewis will also win best actor even though Depp would also deserve it as would Vigo. It was a bad year for them to get nominated. D.D. is crushingly good.

Other Oscar Picks:

Best cinematography - The Assassination of Jesse James …
Best art direction - Sweeney Todd
Best Actress - Did not see all that was nominated but probably the chick from La vie em Rose
Best animated film: Ratatouille will probably win but I have a soft spot for Persepolis...though the best animated film to be nominated should have been Paprika.
Best Director : P.T. Anderson
Best costumes : Sweeney Todd will win but it should be given to Elizabeth II: The revenge (she's back and she's on a horse! oooooooh!)
Bet I am right on all accounts.

Paper Moon

I stayed up last night when I stumbled upon this film.

Paper Moon

The film is set during the Great Depression in the U.S. state of Kansas and it starred the real life father and daughter pairing of Ryan and Tatum O'Neal, as on screen father and daughter Moses and Addie.

It is beautifully shot and no wonder...
It was photographed by Laszlo Kovacs.

You might not recognize the name of Laszlo Kovacs, who passed away in his sleep last year at the age of 74. But generations of movie geeks recognize his indelible images, such as his work on this film (Paper Moon) evocative of the Depression-era portraits by Dorothea Lange and Walker Evans.
From Easy Rider (1969) and Five Easy Pieces to Shampoo (1975) and New York, New York (1977) to Ghostbusters (1984) and Say Anything (1989), Kovacs was a painter of light responsible for an immodest number of classic movie moments. Neon, fluorescent and streetlamps were important figures in the comedies and dramas he shot. What you remember about a Kovacs image is not just its stunning beauty, but how it underlines the emotional exchange between characters. He began his career as a guerrilla cinematographer on the streets of Budapest, chronicling the anti-Communist revolt of 1956 by hiding his camera in a paper bag and smuggling the footage into America. For me, the guys every bit as great as the Hungarians of the '60s and '70s are the Mexicans: Rodrigo Prieto (Brokeback Mountain, Babel, Frida) and Emmanuel Lubezki (Children of Men, Y Tu Mama Tambien and Great Expectations).

The death of Polaroid

The digital age has claimed yet another scalp. Polaroid instant photographs entranced a generation in the 1970s as colour images magically emerged from an unpromising white square of plastic. The technological breakthrough was endorsed over the years by luminaries as diverse as Sir Laurence Olivier, Ali McGraw and Kermit the Frog. But now, with the push of a factory button, Polaroid has consigned its iconic invention to the history books.

The American-based firm has confirmed that it has stopped making its instant film and expects supplies to run out completely in 2009. The announcement has sparked a sales run on the cult cameras with enthusiasts rushing to snap up remaining supplies.

Polaroid is closing factories in Massachusetts, Mexico and the Netherlands with the loss of more than 450 jobs and will belatedly focus on producing digital cameras, portable printers for mobile phones, TVs and DVD players.

Polaroid has already stopped making the cameras. "We are trying to reinvent Polaroid so it lives on for the next 30 to 40 years," said Tom Beaudoin, the firm's president and chief financial officer.

Industry analysts claim Polaroid has suffered greatly by its refusal to embrace the digital technology that has transformed photography.

Instead, executives stuck to the belief that many photographers would want to be able to hold their developed pictures in their hands rather than view them on a screen.

Global sales of traditional camera film have been dropping by around 30% per year.

"Instant film has been falling as fast if not faster," said Ed Lee, a digital photography analyst at the research firm InfoTrends.

"At some point it was inevitable that it had to reach the point where it was going to be uneconomical to keep producing instant film."

Polaroid, which is privately owned, has always refused to disclose financial details about its instant film business.

The announcement has already led sales of Polaroid products to rocket in the US.

"My shelves are completely empty of instant film," said Jeff Newman, who runs Calumet Photographic in Cambridge.

"Polaroid enthusiasts are panicking and are bulk-buying all the stock that we have."

Edward Nute who runs a photography firm in Plymouth, and still occasionally uses Polaroid films for commercial shoots, felt the technology would be missed by many of his colleagues.

He said: "There's something exciting about peeling back a Polaroid photo and seeing the photograph develop before your eyes. I'm going to toast Polaroid for all the fond memories tonight."

http://news.scotsman.com/latestnews/The-death-of-the-Polaroid.3762571.jp

A Jehovah's Witness who for decades refused all surgery on his horrific facial disfigurement has been given hope by a British doctor and new medical technology.

Unwilling to accept a blood transfusion, Jose Mestre has allowed the bloody tumour that first appeared on his lip in adolescence to obliterate almost all of his face.

Now 15 inches long and weighing 12 pounds, it has blinded him in one eye and made eating a daily ordeal. As it begins to block his airways, doctors fear his life could be in danger.

But now one of Britain's leading facial surgeons has proposed treating Jose, 51, by employing ultrasound waves to coagulate the blood before the operation.

This should allow his growths to be removed without risk of heavy bleeding – satisfying his religious prohibition on blood transfusions that has so far hampered his search for treatment.

Jose was examined by two doctors in Britain - Loshan Kangesu, consultant plastic surgeon at Broomfield Hospital, and Dr Iain Hutchison of St Bartholomew's in London.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/12/03/wface103.xml

I photographed Jose in 1998. At the time he told me that when he was a child, he must have done something very wicked and so God punished him.
